Okay, so I gotta be honest — sitting all day (like most of us these days) totally wrecked my back. I used to think “meh, it’s just a little pain, I’ll live,” but then it got bad enough that I was like, nah, gotta fix this.

I tried a bunch of stuff, some didn’t really work, some did. Here’s what actually helped me stop feeling like a pretzel after work.

1. Get Up and Move (I Know, It’s Hard)

This sounds obvious but I seriously didn’t do it for years. I’d sit for hours, gaming or working or whatever, and my back screamed later. Now I set a timer every hour to get up and stretch or walk for 5 mins. It sucks sometimes but your back will thank you.

2. Fix Your Chair or Get a Better One

My old chair was trash. No back support, super stiff. I started using a cushion and eventually bought a chair with lumbar support. If u can’t splurge, even a rolled towel behind your lower back helps a lot. Makes a huge diff.

3. Stretching + Strengthening Exercises

I’m no fitness expert but doing simple stretches for hips and back daily helped soooo much. Also, some light core exercises (planks, bridges) made my back muscles stronger and less prone to pain. Youtube’s got tons of beginner routines — just pick one and stick with it.

4. Watch Your Posture (yeah yeah, I know)

I’m guilty of slouching like 90% of the time. But I try to sit up straight now, shoulders relaxed, feet flat on the floor. Little things like that add up. Also, adjusting screen height so I’m not leaning forward helped.

5. Use Heat or Ice When Needed

After a long day of sitting, sometimes I put a heating pad on my lower back or take a warm shower. It relaxes the muscles. Ice can help if there’s any sharp pain or inflammation but mostly heat for me.

6. Stay Hydrated (random but true)

Dehydrated muscles get stiff faster. I started drinking more water during the day and it helped with my muscle stiffness and back pain. Who knew?

7. Don’t Ignore the Pain

If it’s hurting for days or really bad, don’t just tough it out. I waited too long once and had to see a physio. Sometimes you need professional help and that’s okay.

Final Thoughts

Sitting all day might be unavoidable sometimes but your back doesn’t have to suffer forever. Moving, better chair, stretches, and posture made a huge difference for me. If you’re struggling, try a few of these tips and see what works.

And if your pain is intense or doesn’t improve, please see a doc!
